Appliances are an essential part of our home. From the refrigerator to the oven, washer, dryer, microwave, and dishwasher, these appliances help us keep our home organized, so we can enjoy our daily activities.

However, we often hear many claims about the efficiency and energy savings of these devices that aren’t always true. In this article, we’ll make an overview of the myths and truths about the efficiency and savings of some home appliances.

Truth: The latest generation appliances are more efficient

Indeed, newer appliances on the market are usually more efficient than older models, but there are exceptions to this. The reason behind it is that energy efficiency depends on many factors, such as the size of the appliance, the brand, and the model, as well as the technology used.

Therefore, before buying a new appliance, it’s important to research and compare different models to find the most efficient one. And above all, read appliance labels and look for certifications such as the Energy Star certification. This is a blue-colored seal that allows buyers to identify and purchase energy-responsible products.

Myth: The standby mode doesn’t consume power

This is a common myth that can lead to unnecessary energy consumption. Although appliances in standby mode certainly consume less energy than when in use, they are still consuming energy.

Therefore, it’s important to turn off the devices completely when they are not being used to avoid additional consumption.

Truth: Larger appliances always consume more energy

Larger appliances do tend to consume more energy than smaller models, but this isn’t always the case. As we said before, the efficiency of the appliance will vary depending on the brand, model, and use given to the same.

For example, many people think that a washing machine is an appliance that consumes more energy in the home. The truth is that, if you look at the total expenditure on household appliances, you’ll see that it only represents 11.8%, while the refrigerator consumes 30.6%, according to data from Naturgy.com.

Now, if you have a large family and a small washing machine, this consumption will triple because you will use it more frequently. This is the reason why adapting the appliance to the use we give to the same helps reduce energy consumption.

Myth: Preheating the oven is always necessary

This is a common myth, but the truth is that it all depends on the recipe being prepared. Normally, dishes that require cooking for more than one hour don’t need it. Luckily, the latest generation ovens have a fast-heating system that optimizes the energy of the appliance.

However, an important recommendation is to avoid opening the oven constantly to prevent the loss of 20% of the accumulated energy. It’s also advisable to turn it off a little earlier to take advantage of residual heat.

So, do some research, and compare different appliance models to find the most efficient and suitable to your needs. Turn off appliances when you are not using them to avoid unnecessary consumption. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions and follow their recommendations to ensure efficient use of the appliance. And finally, smart consumption in our homes depends on both the appliances and how we use them.
