This year promises to bring us the completion of several projects that we have been waiting for because, in the wake of the pandemic, there were unavoidable delays.
Thus, the inauguration of the second tallest tower in the world in Malaysia and the opening of the largest archaeological museum in Egypt, among others, are projects that excite architecture lovers. In 2023, world-class studios such as Snøhetta, OMA, Studio Gang, MVDRV, Zaha Hadid Architects, and BIG, to name just a few, are completing their developments in several countries.
Since many projects will be unveiled throughout the year, we made a selection to present you 4 works that will be inaugurated in the United States. The list is long and ranges from the expansion of museums to skyscrapers in neighborhoods that never had one.
4 architectural works you must see
Gilder Center at the American Museum of Natural History, NY, by Studio Gang. The renovation plans to connect the museum’s 10 buildings to create a special campus for exhibition galleries, classrooms, and an immersive digital theater. The entire design is inspired by the earth’s natural processes, following the museum’s theme, such as the formation of canyons and glacial structures.
What’s the result? An impressive cavernous wave-shaped structure made of reinforced concrete with bridges that provide visual connections to the museum’s numerous installations.
The Canyon Residential Building, San Francisco, by MVRDV. This 23-story mixed-use residential building is part of the first phase of the Mission Rock neighborhood and is one of four buildings being promoted for construction by the San Francisco Giants and Tishman Speyer.
The Canyon will feature a ground-floor shopping center with retail and restaurants, two floors of office space, and 283 apartments. The Canyon is the third prominent building in the neighborhood and the first of two residential buildings in the complex. MVRDV is building in collaboration with Perry Architects.
Museum of Fine Arts, Little Rock, by Studio Gang. The renovated Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts will be ready to open to the public on April 22, 2023. Studio Gang worked on the structures to give it its role as a leading arts institution in the region.
Without losing its identity, this renovation connects the old structures with the new ones. Among its most recognizable features is the fact that the museum’s folded plate concrete ceiling connects with the new construction and the completely renovated spaces.
The Spiral, NY, by BIG. This skyscraper, a 66-story tower, features a series of stepped terraces that wrap around the building to the top. Hence its name The Spiral.
The spiral design of the exterior structure means that all floors open up to create hanging gardens that are uninterruptedly connected. At 306 meters high and with more than 260,000 square meters of office space, it won’t be one of the tallest in the city, but it certainly will be one of the most eye-catching.
The Brooklyn Tower, Brooklyn, by SHop Architects. This is the first skyscraper in the area, with 93 floors, and measuring more than 300 meters. Although its height is not the most impressive for this type of building, The Brooklyn Tower will become a must-see due to its architectural design and because it will probably be the only skyscraper ever built in this development.
In general, its design is neo-art deco, which is evident in its large windows and the details of the shiny bronze and deep black metal strips.
There are still many projects we could mention, is there one, in particular, you like to know more about? Feel free to leave us your comments about this preview.
