The Hengqin Cultural and Arts Complex, designed by Atelier Apeiron, represents a symbol of contemporary architecture in Zhuhai, China. This project stands out not only for its innovative design and multifunctionality but also for its commitment to sustainability and harmonious integration with the urban and natural environment.

The complex covers approximately 142,560 square meters and houses nine different areas, including a library, an archive center, a concert hall, a cultural center, an art gallery, a science museum, and activity centers for different age groups. A distinctive feature of the design is the incorporation of three massive arches on the first floor, which serve as the main entrances to different areas of the complex.

These arches, covered with wood and bamboo panels, provide visual warmth and also facilitate the entry of natural light, creating bright and welcoming interior spaces. The building’s façade is composed of a suspended glass curtain wall, chosen for its lightness and flexibility, essential characteristics to withstand the climatic conditions of the region, which is prone to typhoons during the summer. The glass used is low on emissivity, which contributes to the building’s energy efficiency by reducing solar heat gain and improving thermal insulation.

Technological innovations and sustainability

The complex’s design incorporates several technological innovations aimed at sustainability. One of the most prominent is the tiered urban rooftop garden, which exceeds 65% of vegetation cover. This green space provides a natural environment for visitors while it also plays a crucial role in stormwater management through a collection system that irrigates plants and reduces surface runoff.

The complex is also designed to maximize the entry of natural light into its interior spaces. Strategically placed skylights and diffuser reflectors have been incorporated to direct soft sunlight into the interior, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting, and improving the building’s overall energy efficiency.

Costs and efficiency

Although the exact costs of the project have not been disclosed, the choice of materials such as low-emissivity glass and the use of a suspended curtain wall system suggest a significant investment in advanced building technologies. These decisions, along with the modular design of the complex, are aimed at ensuring the building’s durability and flexibility, allowing for future adaptations without generating excessive costs.

The Hengqin Cultural and Arts Complex confirms how architecture combines aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. This project sets a new standard for cultural developments in growing urban environments by integrating innovative materials, sustainable technologies, and responsive design.

In addition to its distinctive architectural design, the complex incorporates sustainable solutions, such as the tiered urban rooftop garden with a considerable percentage of vegetation cover, which contributes to efficient water management and visitor well-being. These features reflect a holistic approach to architecture, where each element is integrated to create a space that enriches the cultural and social life of Zhuhai.
