The millenary practice of Feng Shui is based on the belief that harmony in spaces is the cause of prosperity, peace, and health in the home. Are you familiar with it? No? Well, we’ll tell you more.

Orientals believe that order, and cleanliness, as well as decoration according to certain basic principles, guarantee good fortune in our home. The results of the practice of Feng Shui have been so successful that the same has spread throughout the world, leading architects, designers, and interior decorators to specialize in the area.

Here are some ideas to make your kitchen a more harmonious space according to this ancient discipline.

The elements of Feng Shui

Let’s start with the basics. Earth, metal, water, wood, and fire are the elements in which matter is grouped, according to Feng Shui.

The combination of these elements can bring different effects, and depending on the place in the house, they may or may not be convenient. For example, in the kitchen, the most used elements are fire and water, but since they are opposites, it is not recommended to have them close to each other. That is, the cooktop or range should not be near the sink or refrigerator.

When the distribution of space is not done according to the principles of Feng Shui, “cures” are used to solve the imbalance. This consists of simply including another element that can balance the energy.

Here is an example: if the fire and water elements in your kitchen could not be at a distance, the recommendation would be to place a wooden surface between them to create harmony.

Feng Shui’s dos

Order and cleanliness are key in Feng Shui. Therefore, the more organized and less cluttered the kitchen is, the better. In this sense, choosing organizers and containers that keep everything in its place, both inside and outside the cabinets, is highly recommended.

On the other hand, the most suitable colors are the combination of green tones with beige, as they stimulate prosperity and the flow of wealth.  The palette extends to earth tones because they promote warmth and induce a good appetite.

The color white, on the other hand, is always allowed as it implies purity and peace of mind. So, as you can see, applying Feng Shui colors to the kitchen isn’t complicated.

Feng Shui’s don’ts

This is where it gets complicated. According to this Eastern discipline, placing the cooktop or range in front of the kitchen door is a don’t. The reason is the belief that this can turn the incoming energy stay hot and disturbed, so it’s not recommended.

Another detail in this regard has to do with the number of things in this room of the home. Chairs or furniture in odd numbers promotes disharmony according to Feng Shui.

As for colors, decorators and interior designers should know that based on this ancient method, blue or gray tones are not advisable. Why? Simple, because they cool down the environment and relationships.

Another very important point has to do with waste management. Having garbage bins in sight is not only unsanitary and not pretty, but also, according to Feng Shui, it is a magnet for the energy of poverty and disease.

Whether or not you are a believer in this type of trend, there’s no doubt that Feng Shui appeals to common sense, and if the proposal also promotes harmony and prosperity in the home, it’s wonderful, don’t you think?
