The EPIQ Tower in Quito, Ecuador, is an impressive expression of the architectural talent of the renowned Danish firm BIG. Designed in collaboration with local developers Uribe & Schwarzkopf, this majestic tower stands next to La Carolina Park, a green lung in the heart of the city.

With 24 stories and a height reaching 101 meters, the EPIQ Tower stands out for its innovative design and unique features, which make it an architectural landmark in Quito’s urban landscape. The tower’s distinctive design features stacked blocks in the shape of two F’s that create curves and intertwine in the center of the structure.

Apparent movement

This arrangement creates a sense of dynamic movement and a visually striking aesthetic that redefines the city’s silhouette. The interlocking volumes are not only a technical accomplishment but also offer a unique spatial experience both inside and outside the building.

Besides, the façade of this building is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail of its creators. The porous, colorful tile-clad structure, which echoes the city’s vibrant natural beauty, evokes the vaulted ceilings of the city’s historic cathedrals and colonial buildings. Each block of the tower reflects a unique color, creating a dynamic and changing visual effect as daylight interacts with the structure.

Not at all. In terms of size, the EPIQ Tower is an imposing structure that dominates Quito’s urban landscape. However, its presence is not just a matter of height since the tower has been carefully designed to integrate harmoniously with its surroundings, as its location in the historic center of Ecuador’s capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The building’s strategic location, next to La Carolina Park and opposite a subway station, reflects its commitment to connectivity and sustainable urban living.

Contributions to society

Defined as a three-dimensional community, this building made up of volumes of different sizes offers residents and their families a variety of openings, passageways, parks, and areas for play, social life, work, and fun.

Simply put, the EPIQ Tower is an outstanding example of how contemporary architecture can contribute to the well-being of the community. BIG has prioritized green spaces in its design, creating a “vertical neighborhood” that promotes a healthy, and community-centered lifestyle.

Materials used

Regarding the materials used in the construction of the EPIQ Tower, BIG chose quality and durability. The pigmented concrete used in the façade is aesthetically appealing, durable, and low maintenance. This choice of materials reflects the studio’s commitment to quality and sustainability, ensuring that the tower will be a lasting addition to Quito’s urban landscape.

The EPIQ Tower represents a significant investment in urban infrastructure. However, its impact on the city and its aesthetic and functional value justifies this investment. With its innovative design and focus on integrating green spaces, the EPIQ Tower is a testament to the transformative power of contemporary architecture and a celebration of the creative and visionary spirit of BIG and its collaborators, this architectural masterpiece represents a new vision of urban living in the 21st century.
