Glühwein (or spicy mulled wine) is a recipe that’s part of the Christmas tradition of European countries, and the wine dispenser Plum can help you prepare this beverage.

 

Also known as Mulled or Hot Wine in the United States and England, and as Glögg in Scandinavian countries, this is a common drink shared at those outdoor gatherings held during the winter. Usually, the spiced mulled wine is served in small glasses or stoneware glasses and accompanied by candied fruit cake or strong cheeses.

The mulled wine recipe

  • 4 glasses red wine (125 ml each)
  • 80 gr brown sugar
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • A pinch of grated nutmeg
  • Orange and/or lemon peels
  • Star anise to decorate

 

The preparation of the Christmas mulled wine is very simple. Pour the 2-cup measure that the Plum dispenser gave you into a pot, along with the spices, lemon, and/or orange peels, and brown sugar, and heat for 15 minutes over low heat.

 

Allow these elements to release their aromas and the sugar to caramelize, stirring from time to time. If it sticks, add a splash of wine from the remaining two glasses.

 

Then, when the sugar has dissolved, add the rest of the wine (2 glasses), and keep on low heat for 25 minutes. Important: don’t allow the wine to boil. Before those 25 minutes are up, check the sugar, and add more if you want, and remove from the heat. Let stand and serve garnished with star anise and some orange peels.
